To what extent does a pop star's image influence their audience?
In order for a pop star to be
iconic and recognisable by millions, they need to become unique by developing a
star motif. A star motif is an individual having a signature such as a specific
dress sense, performance or even the way they present their work (such as
specific font on their albums). This is known as brand awareness and the more
the artist does this, the more the audience will familiarise themselves with
the same pattern and catch on which makes the audience engage with the artist,
resulting in them buying their songs. Many artists have star motifs such as
Michael Jackson with his moonwalk, Tool with their unseen mystery and even Lady
gaga with her unique and diverse dress sense.
In terms of
music videos, abstractness is ideal if the video wants to be successful and
well known since a lot of people will have different views about it and
therefore will watch it again and again which also promotes the artist and
their song. An example of this is ‘Sober’ by Tool which is a perfect example of
abstractness; the music video has no correlation to the lyrics and therefore
uses a disjunction technique. The video is quite disturbing and is animated
which makes the music video diverse and allows viewers to watch to determine
their own view of the subject. However, other music videos allow star motifs to
develop further and influence the audience to watch their music videos since
they expect the same behaviour to be shown such as Bruno Mars’ constant dress
sense of sunglasses and a fedora hat.
Andrew Goodwin believed that
every music video needed an element of star image to attract the audience.
Artists lip sync when filming their music video but this creates realism for
the viewers since they believe that the artist are really singing the song and
therefore influences them to think of the artist as a character rather than a
normal singer. Every artist is classified as a character since the artist who
is on stage is a completely different person to the same artist who is at home,
they use star image to make the audience believe that they are the same
character they see on stage as they are at home.

A2 level Music Video Evaluation
This A2 music video covers the song for 'Stacy's mom' by Fountains of Wayne. This video has some advantages and disadvantages but overall I believe this video is graded an D/E. I think this due to the unprofessionalism shown by the characters and the locations since this does not make the music video intriguing to watch. The music video starts off with the band in front of a green screen which may be shown so the band are highlighted towards the viewers but this lack of location is very disappointing. They have not used a green screen effect to show they are in a different location which makes the scene uninteresting and the rest of the room can be seen around the curtain, they could of improved this by not showing the rest of the room from a closer shot. They also have no instruments during this scene which decreases the level or realism greatly, the apparent drummer is not even playing to the synchronisation of the song which looks very unprofessional and displeases the viewers. This scenery is presented to the viewers multiple times and has a long continuous shot between 1:03-1:29, they could of improved by cutting to other scenes or at least different angles in the room.
A good point about this video is that it incorporates the use of Goodwin's theory since there is some evidence showing a connection between the visuals and music. An example of this is at the beginning where the camera cuts to a characters playing their 'air instrument' in synchronisation with the guitar being heard in the song, this would of been satisfactory if they had a real guitar however. The lyrics 'Stacy, do you remember when i mowed your lawn' shows a character watering the 'mom's flowers in her garden which shows some connection but this group should of incorporated the use of the lyrics and they should of used a scene where a lawnmower was present. This brings me to state that they lacked in locations since most of these can be seen filmed at a school which was probably theirs: The greens screen room, stairways and corridors. There is a sense of humour involved in this video which can be accepted with this genre wince it is mild rock and normally involves teenagers who are rebellious or acting in a mischievous manner.
Close ups and mid shots were used quite a lot which does create intimacy with the viewers and allows them to listen to the lyrics more intently but they did not experiment with any zooms or editing effects. This would create excitement for the viewers and allow them to become intrigued in watching more, this brings the reputation of the video down and shows that they have not put their full potential in working with this project. 'Stacy's mom' is a rock song and the group should of thought about the generic conventions that are mostly seen in these videos such as hairstyles and typical instruments but this is not seen in their videos. Their costume may be accepted since most mild rock videos have causal clothing but they normally are the same colour with each other or wearing colours that suit the background and location they are in. This is not the case here since they have a literal green screen which they have not bothered to use as an effect. I believe this is a D/E grade due to the lack of locations, costume, motivation for the project, generic conventions, editing effects and most importantly it does not appeal to the audience. I would give this video a 3/10 as it is very poor.

The Brief
Today, we were introduced to our A2 media course of creating a music video which will also include a website to promote the CD, music video and a make a CD/DVD package. This will show our technical and creative skills that we have as we will need to create a song and CD cover. Me and my group have already started to make decisions on what genre our band should be and some creative effects in the music video such as colour splashing and pop art effects.
I am looking forward to this new course as I specialise in music and enjoy listening to a variety of genres from Hip-Hop to Classical. I also admire many music videos which will give me and my group inspiration in creating our own and I have made my own CD's and promoted them in the past. In order for us to create a successful CD and music video, we must make it appealing to people as well as enjoyable to listen and to watch.
